The Nutcracker

E. T. A. Hoffmann

The Nutcracker by E.T.A. Hoffman

Growing up my parents would take me each Christmas season to see The Nutcracker ballet. I always enjoyed falling into the magical story and imagined being up on the stage dancing with the Sugar Plum Fairy. I have never lost my love for the ballet and still enjoy any production the Nutcracker I can find.

In my teen years I finally read The Nutcracker for the first time. I was so sad; it was nothing like the story I had seen performed so many times before. I had vowed never to read it again (the stubborn teenage years). Now fast forward to my twenties, I decided to give it another try. This time with fresh eyes I fell in love with Hoffmann’s tale. In fact, I remember reading it several times that holiday season. To this day (over 20 years later) I am still enchanted by the Nutcracker, both the story and ballet.

If you have never read Hoffmann’s original tale of The Nutcracker, I urge you to open the pages and let the story whisk you away into his magical world.
